Hackney Carriage Etiquette in Leeds – A Guide for Passengers
Whether you're heading to Headingley or just across the city, following a few simple courtesies will make your journey more enjoyable for everyone.
1. Hailing a Taxi
Look for a taxi with its yellow illuminated taxi sign on as this means “For Hire” and also the vehicle being white with a black bonnet as this is the uniform colour for Hackney Carriage Taxis in Leeds.
Raise your hand clearly and stand on the pavement—not in the road.
Always take the first available cab in line at ranks which are located in the City centre and surrounding areas.
2. Getting In
Enter from the kerb side when it’s safe.
Greet your driver politely.
State your destination clearly. If you prefer a particular route, mention it before the journey starts.
3. During the Journey
Treat the driver with courtesy and respect.
Keep noise to a reasonable level. Avoid using speakers or making loud phone calls.
No smoking or vaping in the vehicle.
Please don’t eat or drink unless the driver says it’s okay.
4. Payment
All Hackney carriages in Leeds must use a working meter.
Drivers must accept card or contactless payment.
Tipping is appreciated but optional.
Please note that out-of-town destinations must be paid in advance.
5. Ending the Journey
Exit safely onto the pavement side.
Don’t leave rubbish or belongings behind.
A polite “thank you” goes a long way!
6. Problems or Complaints
Stay calm and note the licence number which are affixed on the front passenger and driver doors and also on the rear bumper as these are the identity of each taxi.
